FREIJA reaches next milestone for one of Europe’s largest eMethane projects in Finland
16/4/2026
FREIJA has received the official Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) conclusion for the planned eMethane production in Tampere, Finland. The EIA completion marks the start of permitting and detailed FEED studies, forming the basis for the final investment decision (FID).
“The EIA conclusion confirms that the Tampere project can be developed with our partners within a well-defined environmental framework and enables FREIJA to continue our efforts towards project execution with FID in 2027. This is a key milestone in our engineering strategy for developing scalable clean fuel production capacity in the Nordics to meet growing European demand,” says Kristian Hauglum, CEO of FREIJA.
The EIA, issued by the Finnish Licensing and Supervisory Authority, substantially reduces the project’s regulatory and financing risk. It provides a publicly validated basis for continued engagement with authorities, partners and financing institutions, and supports ongoing negotiations of long-term eMethane offtake agreements.
FREIJA’s clean fuel will be produced from green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂ and distributed through existing gas infrastructure. FREIJA’s Tampere project, located in the Kolmenkulma ECO3 industrial area, is positioned to deliver scalable clean fuel to support the decarbonization of heavy-duty transport and maritime sectors, while strengthening Europe’s energy system and leveraging existing infrastructure and industrial ecosystems.
The EIA conclusion was granted for three phases, each designed with approximately 160 MW of electrolysis capacity. Each phase will produce approximately 58,000 tonnes of renewable eMethane with the potential to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 200,000 tonnes annually by displacing fossil fuels.
The project has secured a EUR 110.6 million tax credit under Finland’s clean transition investment program, and current offtake interest exceeds the planned capacity of the first phase.

About FREIJA
FREIJA develops industrial scale clean fuel production and distribution to enable carbon-neutral fuel provision for European transport. The company is advancing one of Europe’s largest eMethane production plants at Tampere, Finland, as the cornerstone of a multi-phased clean fuel production plan. FREIJA’s modular and roll-out production platform enables efficient scale-up for delivery of competitive synthetic natural gas (eMethane) into existing energy distribution systems to support emissions reductions in hard-to-abate transport sectors.
